Economic development typically involves a structural transformation in which a dominantly agrarian economy moves towards being more manufacturing and services-based. However, across Africa, many countries’ economies rely especially heavily on agriculture compared with the rest of the world, in terms of both output and jobs. VoxDev's new VoxDevLit, brought together by Tavneet Suri and Christopher Udry, provides an up-to-date summary of recent research on agricultural technology in Africa, and highlights how agriculture has stagnated on the continent before reviewing explanations of this stagnation through the lens of particular constraints to technology adoption and exploring the role of heterogenous returns to agricultural technologies across Africa.
